Cholera reported near Bujumbura
Reports from Burundi say some fifteen cases of cholera have been recorded near the capital, Bujumbura, over the past few days. Local officials said every day, two or three new cases of cholera were reported in the Kinama suburb. The area was attacked and briefly occupied last month by rebels of the National Liberation Forces. The official said the water supply had still not been restored to Kinama, and added that there could still be some unrecovered bodies around. The Burundian army said the fighting for Kinama, which lasted more than ten days, left some two-hundred rebels and twenty soldiers dead. It said clashes were still continuing in the hills above the capital; a military source told the French news agency thirty rebels and two soldiers had been killed in the Gasarara, Mbare and Nyambuye districts.
