Sharif party elects new leader
Members of the Pakistan Muslim League - the party of the exiled former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif - have elected a new president.

Correspondents say the move is likely to expose further divisions in the party.

The new leader, Mian Mohammad Azhar a former governor of Lahore has been openly critical of Mr Sharif's government which was overthrown in a military coup in 1999.

Supporters of the former prime minister refused to take part in the vote.

Divisions within the PML were triggered when Mr Sharif's allies joined the main opposition group, the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy, which is opposed to the military government.
