Cholera reported near Bujumbura
Reports from Burundi say some fifteen cases of cholera have been recorded near the capital, Bujumbura, over the past few days. A local official told the French news agency, AFP, that every day two or three cases of cholera were reported in the Bujumbura suburb of Kinama. The area was attacked and briefly occupied last month by rebels of the National Liberation Forces. The official said the water supply to the area had still not been restored adding that there could still be some unrecovered bodies around. The Burundian army said the fighting for Kinama, which lasted more than ten days, left some two-hundred rebels and twenty soldiers dead. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
