Niger government wins confidencde vote

The government of Niger has survived a motion of no confidence over its handling of student demonstations and the closure of the capital's university campus.

The motion, calling for the resigation of the Prime Minister, Hama Amoudou, was backed by twenty-eight opposition members of parliament.

It followed student demonsrations in the capital, Naimey, last week demanding the release of sixteen students detained after clashes with police last month.

One paramilitary gendarme was killed and twenty-five injured in the clashes.

Twenty-one protesters were also hurt.

The university campus has been closed since.
