Brits winners' sales soar
![]() Coldplay's album sales have risen six-fold
The winners at this year's Brits have seen CD sales jump thanks to their awards success.
Coldplay, who won Best British Group and Best British Album, have enjoyed the biggest sales rise since the awards, held on Monday. Their debut album, Parachutes, sold six times as many copies in the week after the awards compared with the previous weeks. They are now likely to land in the top three of the album charts as a result.
But female singer-songwriter Dido - who was nominated and lost out in the Best Female category - is likely to keep her place at the top of the album charts despite not winning an award. Nevertheless the winner in her category, Sonique, has sold five times as many copies of her album Hear My Cry since the ceremony. Big increases And U2, who picked up a lifetime achievement award to go with their three Grammys, saw sales treble of their latest album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Robbie Williams saw sales of his CD double after stealing the show by winning three gongs.
HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "The acts that have done best out of the Brits are the relative newcomers like Sonique, Kelis and Coldplay who have received a level of TV exposure they may not have had before." The increases are similar to those seen in America after the Grammy Awards, when sales of Steely Dan's Two Against Nature - named best album - rose from 3,000 to over 30,000 per week.
