Prison governor killed in Mexico
The authorities in Mexico say a prison governor in the central state of Michoacan has been shot dead. The official, Fernando Gutierrez, had recently adopted a security crackdown in the prison he headed in the city of Uruapan. A statement from the Michoacan state government said the attack could have been a reprisal for the measures. His killing was the third of a prominent prison official in Mexico in the past few months. In November, a former prison director was killed in Hidalgo state; two weeks later another senior officer in the same prison was shot dead. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
