Chechen prosecutor denies prisoner camp
The senior Chechen prosecutor, Vsevolod Chernov, has denied the existence of a makeshift holding camp for Chechen civilians at a Russian military base. Mr Chernov's denial came after he had completed a personal inspection in the Vedeno district of southern Chechnya. Last week a Russian journalist, with the Novaya Gazeta newspaper, Anna Politkovska said she had seen such a camp at the base at Khatuny, and that six metre deep pits were used for holding prisoners there.
