Ugandan presidential poll postponed
The Ugandan presidential election has been postponed by five days, until March the twelfth because of anomalies in voter registration lists. The decision was made during a meeting between the electoral commission and representatives of the six presidential candidates. The electoral commission says the delay will allow more time for the display of voting registers and the distribution of voting cards. A BBC correspondent in Kampala says there are reportedly over a million more people on the registers than there are Ugandans of eligible voting age. The incumbent, President Yoweri Museweni, who's been in the post for fifteen years, is running for a final five-year term. March the twelfth is the last possible day the presidential elections can be held under Ugandan law. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
