Eight killed in Pakistan
A curfew is in force in the Pakistani town of Hangu, in North West Frontier province, after heavy exchanges of fire continued late into the night. At least eight people were killed in a day of sectarian violence. Three Shi'ite shopkeepers died when armed men emerged from a van and opened fire in a crowded market. Later, one Sunni Muslim was killed and three injured in a rocket attack. The bodies of two other Sunni men, who the police said were shot dead in sectarian attacks, were taken to a hospital -- although the circumstances of their deaths are not clear. Violence in Hangu broke out the day after a militant Pakistani Sunni activist, Haq Nawaz, was hanged for killing an Iranian diplomat ten years ago. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
