Food poisoning kills 40
The authorities in Haiti say nearly forty people have died within the past week from food poisoning, most of them children. The Haitian public health minister, Michaelle Amedee Gedeon, said they had eaten a tropical fruit known as akee either on an empty stomach or before it was ripe. Akee is edible when ripe, but can be toxic before it has fully matured. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
