Indian army ambushed in Kashmir

Police in Indian-administered Kashmir say four people, including an Indian army colonel, have been killed in an attack by suspected separatist militants.

The police said the guerrillas ambushed an army convoy in Anantnag district, fifty kilometres south of Srinagar, killing the colonel, and injuring several other soliders, including a brigadier.

Three Kashmiri civilians were killed when troops returned fire towards their attackers. In its report on the ambush, however, the army said none of its troops were killed. The Hizbul Mujahadeen separatist group says it carried out the attack, which comes a week after India extended its unilateral ceasefire in the state by another three months.
