Peru: Fujimori charged with abandoning post

The Peruvian Attorney General's office has filed formal criminal charges against the disgraced former president, Alberto Fujimori, for abandonment of office.

Mr Fujimori fled to Japan last November after his government became engulfed in a corruption scandal.

The Supreme Court will now investigate the accusations.

The move comes after Congress voted, last week, in favour of stripping the former president of his parliamentary immunity paving the way for criminal proceedings.

But Mr Fujimori -- who has dual Peruvian-Japanese nationality -- has repeatedly said he will not return to Peru and the government in Tokyo has indicated it has no intention of handing him over to the Peruvian authorities for trial.
