Seattle and the state of Washington was rocked by an earthquake which left thousands without power and caused serious damage to buildings across the region.

Masonry came crashing down across the city

People had to run for their lives

Thousands thronged immediately into the streets

Some took the chance for a picture in unusual surroundings

Telephones were still working but many services were cut off

The Alaska Way Viaduct and Colman ferry dock were closed for inspection

Commercial damage also suffered considerable damage

Gaping holes punctured beautiful façades
