The trial of a Dutch lorry driver charged with the manslaughter of 58 Chinese people who were trying to enter the UK illegally is due to start on Wednesday.

The 54 men and four women were found dead at Dover's eastern docks in Kent in June.

They had suffocated in a sealed lorry container used to carry tomatoes from the Belgian port of Zeebrugge.

Perry Wacker, 32, of Rotterdam, Holland, denies manslaughter and attempting to smuggle people into the UK illegally.

Rescued alive

Co-defendant Ying Guo, 29, a female Chinese interpreter of South Woodford, east London, is on trial for conspiracy to facilitate illegal entry into the UK.

Two men rescued alive from the lorry are expected to give evidence at the trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

The 58 bodies were flown home to the Fujian province of China last month.
