Putin's historic trip to Vietnam

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has begun a two-day visit to Vietnam, the first time that a Russian or Soviet head of state has ever visited the country.

Both countries have said they want to renew their traditionally good relations and say they hope to sign a joint statement on strategic partnership.

On specific issues, Mr Putin will hold talks on the future of the Russian naval base at Cam Ranh Bay; Moscow's lease expires in three years time and the BBC Hanoi correspondent says it's not clear that the Russians can afford the sums of money which Vietnam is now looking for to extend it. Cam Ranh Bay's deepwater facilities are much sought after, with both China and the United States also having expressed an interest in using them. Mr Putin is also seeking new arms supply contracts from Vietnam's armed forces.
