Top anti-drugs official resigns in Mexico

The head of Mexico's anti-organized crime unit, Jose Trinidad Larrieta, has resigned amid a controversy over two recent escape cases.

Mr Larrieta had come under suspicion after the recent escape from house arrest of an official from the attorney general's office , Jose Manuel Diaz who was being investigated by his unit.

Mr Larrieta said there was no proof that he had helped him escape.

Mr Larrieta's unit, which is in charge of prosecuting drug offenses and other federal crimes, had also been accused of violating the rights of suspects in last month's escape of a major drug suspect Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
