New find of bodies in Borneo
As Indonesian security forces continue their efforts to contain ethnic violence on the island of Borneo, the local authorities say that more than a-hundred bodies have been found. The victims were mainly migrants from the island of Madura, who were attacked by indigenous Dayaks in more than a week of violence in the province of central Kalimantan. This brings the number of people known to have been killed in the violence to nearly four-hundred. The Indonesian government says it plans to end the violence within the next three days. But the security minister, Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono, said after visiting the area that killings might continue in more remote areas. More troops are being brought in. Thousands of terrified people have been emerging from hiding in the rainforest, where they fled to escape slaughter, and are now waiting to be evacuated. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
