Man dies in hotel fall
Edinburgh Castle
Mr Rammelt wanted Edinburgh Castle in the picture
A man died on Saturday morning after falling from the fourth floor of an Edinburgh hotel, police have confirmed.

Mathew Rammelt, 31, a sales manager from Windsor, plunged 60ft to his death from an open bedroom window at the Point Hotel in Edinburgh.

Mr Rammelt's fiancée, Nicole Bouchet, 35, a former airline attendant, had been trying to take a picture of him with Edinburgh Castle in the background, when he lost his balance and fell to the street below.

Lothian and Borders Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The tragedy happened less than 12 hours after Mr Rammelt proposed to Ms Bouchet by dropping an engagement ring into her glass of champagne over dinner.

The couple, who lived in Windsor, had been together for nearly one year and planned to marry in October.

The dead man's father, Tony Rammelt, 63, said on Monday: "They had been taking pictures of each other and he fell out of an open window as Nicole was taking a picture of him.

"Nicole has told me she was over the moon when Matthew proposed to her but 12 hours later her heart was torn out.

'Smashing guy'

"She is back home but is too devastated to talk about what happened.

"Matthew was a smashing guy and a romantic and he talked to me about proposing to Nicole but she didn't know."

Mr Rammelt senior, of Harrow, London, said his son, the second of three boys, had been to Edinburgh many times before and had chosen the city to propose because he loved it.

He added: "The police have the camera at the moment but Nicole has said that when she gets it back she is going to destroy it."

Tony Rammelt said he did not plan to travel to Edinburgh and had made arrangements to have his son's body brought back to London.
