Gwent police
A description of the attacker has been issued by police
Gwent Police are investigating the stabbing of a 29-year-old police officer.

Pc Michael Gunter was on patrol in the docks area of Newport, Gwent, when he was knifed in the chest.

He called for help on his radio and was later found collapsed.

A full scale search of the area was made, but the man remains at large

Inspector Kevin Lanigan, Gwent Police
Police describe the attack as "random" and said that it had left them mystified.

Inspector Kevin Lanigan, of Gwent Police, said: "It was an unprovoked and unexpected attack, which resulted in Pc Gunter being injured.

"A full scale search of the area was made using the police helicopter and police dogs but the man is still at large."

Pc Gunter was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, and allowed home after surgery to a knife wound.

Police are appealing for help from anyone who witnessed the attack, which happened on the base of the transporter bridge in the Pill area of the town on Sunday afternoon.

The attacker is described as white, in his early 20s with dark hair and of chubby build.

He was wearing a blue tracksuit top.
