What the Bafta winners said...
Stephen Daldry
Stephen Daldry: "Working with Jamie's an absolute joy"
The winners of this year's Baftas gave emotional acceptance speeches and made a few surprising comments as they collected their awards.

"Lots of people have given me a tremendous opportunity. And Russell Crowe said that I had to thank him, so thanks a lot mate."
Best actor Jamie Bell

"Oh heck, thank you. This is heaven. We had a brilliant script and a fabulous choreographer - he got me to do things I never thought were possible. Human rights were violated on one occasion."
Best actress Julie Walters

"I am absolutely thrilled but I dedicate my awards tonight to my mother. I had a trusted team and all the actors were wonderful. Oliver Reed did a superb job and I am very proud that his last film was mine."
Julie Walters
Julie Walters: "Brilliant script and fabulous choreographer"
Gladiator director Ridley Scott [best film]

"This movie is Sense And Sensibility all over again but instead of verbal fights it was physical fights. It was a wonderful wonderful experience."
Best director Ang Lee

"Any award that we get is a surprise and genuine joy because it was not what we expected when we made the film. Working with Jamie has been an absolute joy - we are very proud of him indeed. "
Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry [British film of the year]

"It seems like only five minutes since we watched Jamie tap-dancing on a toilet roof thinking 'would this really work?'"
Albert Finney
Albert Finney: "Not a bad old fellow"
Billy Elliot screenwriter Lee Hall

"If in years to come you cannot say he's a jolly good fellow, I hope at least you'll be able to say he's not a bad old fellow."
Academy Fellowship recipient Albert Finney

"Good casting is hard and of course it's to do with knowledge of actors, with intuition and perception of both the actor and the director."
Outstanding British contribution of cinema winner Mary Selway
