Police disperse opposition protest in Togo
Police in Togo have forcibly broken up an opposition demonstration in the capital, Lome. The opposition say at least ten people were injured and several others arrested. The protest was called by the Committee of Action for Renewal in protest at what the opposition says are government plans to postpone parliamentary elections due in October. The protesters also carried banners welcoming a report from the United Nations and the Organisation of African Unity, backing allegations of murder, torture and rape by the security forces after the presidential elections in 1998. The authorities banned the demonstration, but denied anyone was injured by police dispersing the protest. The organisers said five- to ten-thousand people took part in the protest, but police said it attracted only a few hundreds. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
