Zapatour involved in traffic accident
A convoy of Mexican Zapatista rebels has been delayed on the outskirts of its latest stop, Queretaro, by a road accident. The Mexican authorities said at least six people were injured when one of the buses in the convoy crashed against another vehicle carrying members of the Zapatista Information Centre. A bus carrying twenty-four Zapatista rebels was also hit from the back, but none of them was injured. Hundreds of Zapatistsa sympathisers have been waiting in Queretaro to welcome the convoy -- popularly known as the Zapatour. It is travelling across the country from the southern state of Chiapas to Mexico City to press for greater rights for indigenous Mexicans. The Zapatour is scheduled to arrive in the capital in two weeks for a meeting with members of congress. The Mexican president, Vicente Fox, has offered to meet them, but so far no encounter has been scheduled. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
