Anti-nuclear demonstration in Taiwan
Several thousand people are expected to take part in a demonstration in Taiwan today Saturday against the building of a new nuclear power station on the island. The Taiwanese government tried to scrap the plant, but was forced to back down after a political row with the opposition-dominated parliament. Anti-nuclear groups are calling for a referendum on the issue. A BBC correspondent in the region says the size of the demonstration will be a sign of how much popularity the government has lost and how much resentment it faces within the ranks of its own supporters.
