Opposition to protest in Togo

One of the main opposition parties in Togo says it's calling a demonstration today Saturday to demand that parliamentary elections be held as scheduled in October.

The government has suggested that the poll be postponed.

Several other parties have said they will join the protest, by the Committee of Action for Renewal, despite a government ban.

The demonstration follows the release of a United Nations report into the violence which followed Togo's presidential elections in 1998.

The report supported allegations that the country's security forces murdered, tortured, and raped people after a poll widely condemned as fraudulent.
