'Namibian mine' in Congo

The Mines Ministry in Namibia has responded to a newspaper report that Namibia owns and controls a diamond mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The report in the Republican 2000 paper quotes the Mines Minister, Yezayo Nyamo, as saying that mine, in the southern Congolese city of Shikapa, was run by a joint Namibian and American concern with the agreement of the Congolese government.

A spokesman for the Minister responded to the newspaper article by saying the Namibian government has never denied owning diamond interests in Congo; but he said the minister had been quoted out of context by the newspaper.
