Jailed Kyrgyz opposition figure appeals
A military court in Kyrgyzstan has begun hearing an appeal by the leading opposition figure, Felix Kulov, against his conviction and jail sentence for abuse of office. Mr Kulov was convicted in January to seven years in prison on charges relating to his time as a national security minister from 1997 to 1998. Speaking before the hearing -- which is being held in private -- Mr Kulov's lawyer said he was pessimistic about the outcome. About a-hundred people surrounded the court in Bishkek waving placards in support of Mr Kulov. Last month the United States said the proceedings gave every appearance of being politically motivated. Mr Kulov has declared his ambition to be president. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
