More Turabi supporters arrested in Sudan

Security forces in Sudan have detained more supporters of the Islamist opposition leader, Hassan al-Turabi -- a day after he was arrested.

Mr Turabi's Popular National Congress said activists had been arrested in the capital Khartoum and other parts of the country.

Armed police have also been deployed outside Mr Turabi's house, his party headquarters and the offices of its newspaper Rai al-Shaab, which failed to appear today.

No official charges have been made against Mr Turabi who was detained after it emerged that his party had signed a document with the main southern rebel group.

Sudan's Information Minister, Ghazi Salah Eddin, said Mr Turabi had been arrested for cooperating with what he called a terrorist organisation to fight the state.
