Punjab lifts ban on bullock-cart racing

The Indian state of Punjab has lifted it's ban on bullock-cart racing following a review by the state authorities.

A senior official said it had decided to allow races using bullocks, dogs and horses, but only if there's no cruelty to the animals.

The official said the use of whips and intoxicants for urging on the animals is strictly forbidden.

A separate ban on dog, ram and cock fights is to remain. Correspondents say preparations are now underway for Punjab's biggest rural sports event, the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics, due to open on Friday
