The woman at the centre of the internet adoption wrangle has been arrested over the alleged theft of travellers' cheques used to fund her transatlantic trip to collect the twin girls.

Judith Kilshaw, 48, from Buckley, north Wales, was questioned on Wednesday at Mold Police Station over the use of £2,500 worth of cheques.

It is understood she went to the station voluntarily and has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Mrs Kilshaw and her husband Alan have been the subject of world-wide media attention ever since the American-born twins were taken into care in January, following the outcry surrounding the case.

Leaving the station, Mrs Kilshaw - a mother-of-four - refused to comment apart from saying that she had done nothing wrong and that she had co-operated with the police questioning.

"I have always told the truth and look where it got me," she said.

As well as fighting to get the seven-month-old twin girls back in their care, the couple have been served with a writ by a rival American couple - Richard and Vickie Allen - who said they had agreed to pay an internet broker £4,000 to adopt the girls.

They have accused the Kilshaws of abducting the twins and deceiving both US and British officials in order to get them back to Britain.

The Kilshaws - who are reported to have paid £24,000 for the twins - have denied claims by the babies' mother that they knew about the first "adoption" before taking the babies to the UK.

Meanwhile, the twins' mother, Tranda Wecker has said she wants the girls back and has announced that she is starting legal proceedings.

The future of the children is now in the hands of a High Court judge.
