Yemen violence claims further victims

Reports from Yemen say two opposition candidates have been killed in further violence as vote counting continues following Tuesday's local elections and referendum.

One of them was said to have been shot dead after being declared elected in Ibb province. There are also reports that three policemen were shot dead in an attack at a vote-counting centre west of the capital, Sanaa.

The ruling General People's Congress has called for an inquiry into the violence on polling day itself, which left at least six people dead.

Opposition parties have alleged that there were serious irregularities in the polls and want fresh elections to be held. The proposed constitutional amendments which were put to Yemenis in the referendum would extend the term of office of the president and members of parliament.
