Burma clashes with Shan rebels

Reports from the border between Burma and Thailand say fresh fighting has broken out between Burmese troops and separatist Shan rebels.

Thai officials said the Shan rebels fired mortars at a Burmese border post, killing one soldier.

There's been no word from the Burmese military government.

The scene of the fighting was close to the Thai town of Mae Sai where Thai and Burmese troops exchanged gunfire ten days ago. That confrontation occurred when fighting between the Burmese army and the Shan spilled over into Thai territory, killing two Thai civilians and heightening tensions.
