Indonesian VP in Borneo

The Indonesian vice-president, Megawati Sukarnoputri, is visiting central Kalimantan province, on the island of Borneo, where tens of thousands of settlers have fled attacks by local Dayak people.

She's in the town of Sampit, the site of the biggest refugee camp, and the scene of some of the worst violence.

More than four-hundred people have been killed -- most of them immigrants from the island of Madura.

The security forces say they are now bringing the armed gangs under control.

But the BBC South East Asia correspondent says the security forces barely function any more; they've stood aside allowing the Dayaks to vent their anger on the Madurese community.
