Refugees fleeing on Borneo

Thousands of people have fled the Indonesian town of Sampit in Kalimantan after a new outbreak of ethnic clashes in which at least twenty people have been killed.

Officials in the provincial capital, Palangka Raya said hundreds of trucks and buses packed with refugees had arrived there from Sampit.

The latest fighting broke out on Sunday when indigenous Dayak people attacked a settlement of people who'd been moved to Kalimantan from the Javanese island of Madura under the government transmigration programme.

Hundreds of people have died in clashes between the two groups over the past few years, mainly caused by disputes over land and job opportunities.
