Nicaragua-Honduras dispute takes new twist
Nicaragua has sent a protest note to the Organisation of American States expressing concern over what it says is a military build-up by Honduras along their border. The Nicaraguan president, Arnoldo Aleman, accused Honduras of violating an agreement signed almost a year ago, which was intended to prevent their border dispute from escalating into armed conflict. Under the terms of the accord, both countries agreed to freeze the deployment of ground forces and carry out joint naval patrols. Honduras has denied deploying troops along the border with Nicaragua, and has invited international observers to the region. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
