Election date expected in Montenegro

The president of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, has called a general election for April the twenty-second.

Correspondents say that if his supporters win, they'll call a referendum on independence from Yugoslavia a couple of months later.

Recent opinion surveys suggest more than half the people of Montenegro want independence. On Monday, the Montenegrin parliament approved laws allowing a referendum to be held. Montenegro and Serbia are all that's left of the Yugoslav Federation.

Western leaders have been warning that a split from Yugoslavia could cause unnecessary instability in the region.
