Palestinians threaten revenge at Hamas funeral

Thousands of Palestinians have attended the funeral of the Hamas leader Mahmud el-Madani, who died after being shot yesterday near the West Bank town of Nablus.

The mourners, waving Palestinian and Hamas flags, shouted cries for revenge against Israel.

The governor of Nablus Mahmoud Aloul accused Israeli undercover troops of carrying out the attack.

He said that what he called Israel's policy of assassinating Palestinian activists would only strengthen the uprising.

Israel has not commented publicly on the killing, but Israeli security sources have accused Mr el-Madani of involvement in two recent car-bomb attacks. Another Palestinian official in Nablus said several people had been arrested in connection with the attack.
