UN warns of Afghan humanitarian tragedy

The United Nations says at least one million Afghans who have fled fighting and drought are threatened by famine.

A senior UN humanitarian affairs official, Kenzo Oshima, said after returning from a tour of Afghanistan and Pakistan, that there was an urgent need for help from the international community.

Half the refugees were crammed into camps for displaced people, the others in villages which aid workers could not reach.

Mr Oshima said that at one refugee camp near the town of Jaluzai he'd seen what he described as a sea of people living in unbelievable misery.
