Indian bureaucrat killed in Manipur

The authorities in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur say unidentified gunmen have killed a senior official in the town of Moreh, near the Burmese border.

They said armed men ambushed the vehicle of T H Chaoba, after he drove out of his house last night following a telephone call.

Police say they are not clear whether the gunmen were separatists or smugglers.

Moreh is seen by the authorities as an entry point for drugs from Burma.
