Alan Garcia's comeback rattles Peru

There's growing controversy in Peru following the announcement by the former president, Alan Garcia, that he is to seek re-election next April.

Mr Garcia said he would return from exile in Colombia in the coming days.

He is accused of taking one million dollars in bribes while he was in office between 1985 and 1990 -- charges he says are politically motivated.

Several other challengers for the presidency have said he should put on trial before he is allowed to stand in the election. A record seventeen candidates have registered for the election, which is being held to choose a replacement for Alberto Fujimori, who was dismissed last November.
