UN says no shells danger

The United Nations administrator in Kosovo, Bernard Kouchner, has also dismissed fears about any health dangers from depleted uranium-tipped shells.

Mr Kouchner, himself a medical doctor, was speaking during a visit to Klina, in northern Kosovo, where NATO planes attacked Yugoslav army tanks in 1999.

Mr Kouchner said NATO had taken many precautions and he was convinced there were no real risks.

He said he saw no reason to close off bombsites to public access, adding that in any case the UN did not know the precise location of all the depleted uranium sites.
