Landmine kills three in Namibia

Reports from Namibia say three people were killed when their vehicle struck what's believed to have been a landmine.

The dead are said to include a local government official and a member of the Defence Force.

Police say eight people, including at least five members of an army patrol, were in the vehicle when it set off the mine yesterday Monday at Omega, about three-hundred-and-seventy kilometres east of Rundu in north-eastern Namibia.

A spokesman for a human rights group, the National Society for Human Rights, Zen Mnakapa, said there had been a flurry of landmine blasts and ambushes since Namibia agreed thirteen months ago to allow Angolan troops to pursue Angolan UNITA rebels across the border.
