Paralympic champion Tanni-Grey Thompson has rounded off a golden 2000 by collecting the title of BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year.
The athlete from Cardiff was presented with her award in a ceremony at St David's Hall on Monday by Britain's most famous Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave. She picked up four gold medals at the Sydney Paralympics - her final appearance - at 100, 200,400 and 800 metres. It is the second time that Grey-Thompson has won the trophy - the other occasion was in 1992 when she was unable to collect the trophy herself because of competitions.
"Its amazing to take it for a second time," said Grey-Thompson. Her triumph follows her success at the BBC's UK Sports Personality of the Year where she was voted into third place. Embassy World Snooker Champion Mark Williams was the runner-up in Wales. Williams from Ebbw Vale, south Wales, took the Embassy World Snooker title in a thriller final with his Welsh team mate Matthew Stevens, after coming back from 13-7 down. In just four years, he has risen from 119th in the world ranking to Number One, after taking the Thai Masters and the Grand Prix title in 200. Penarth's Olympic yachtmsan Ian Barker - silver medallist in the "49er class" in Sydney - came third. Team award This year's team award was won by Swansea City football club who won promotion to the Second Division last season, winning the club's first title in 50 years. Steve Redgrave also presented the Carwyn James Junior Award to young Welsh athletes Lloyd Upsdell and Anneliese Heard. Triathlete Anneliese built on her 1999 success last year, and was tipped for the Olympics. Lloyd, was just 17 when he competed in the Sydney Paralympics, but took atletic golds and a silver in the 4x100m relay. Wales's rugby league coach Clive Griffiths was the winner of the 2000 merit award.
