Bush defends embattled nominee
President-Elect George W. Bush has reiterated his support for Linda Chavez, his embattled nominee for labour secretary, who has faced fierce criticism from Democrats for sheltering an illegal immigrant from Guatamala. Chavez, already a controversial choice because of her right-wing views, said she welcomed the woman into her home in the early 1990s as an act of charity rather than as an employee.
