Man killed by Tajik border landmine

Officials in Tajikistan say that one man was killed and two others injured after they stepped on a landmine on Tajikistan's mountainous border with Uzbekistan.

It is the latest in a series of incidents along the border, in which some twenty civilians have been killed, inluding children, in the seven months since Uzbek border guards mined the frontier in an attempt to stave off incursions by Islamic rebels.

Tajik officials say most of those killed or injured had gone into the mountains to gather firewood or collect herbs.

Correspondents say the border is still not clearly marked, and the mined areas are not clearly defined.
