Metal bolt found in pasta
A food company has launched an investigation after a metal bolt was found in a tin of Bob The Builder pasta bought by a south Wales family.
Grandmother Jackie Evans, 44, of Gurnos, Merthyr Tydfil, discovered the inch-long bolt as she served the Bob-shaped pasta to granddaughter Ellie, two. Jackie said: "I saw something shiny on the spoon. I was stunned when I picked it out and saw it was a metal bolt. "It was a good inch in length. I hate to think what would have happened if I hadn't spotted it." Manufacturers HP say they are investigating. Ben, 15, is UK's youngest farmer Schoolboy Ben Wonnacott has won one of the "Oscars" of the farming world - after starting his own farm at the age of 14. Ben, from Milford Haven, is officially named Young Farmer of the Year by the National Farmers' Union. Now aged 15, he had no previous links with agriculture, and lives in a terraced house in the middle of town. But he ploughed his pocket money into buying livestock, and now has 15 acres, 14 sheep, four beef cows, and 17 chickens. He gets up at 6am every day to tend his livestock and returns after school.
Flower could provide new cure Scientists in Mid Wales believe a wild flower could provide the next generation of natural antibiotics. The bog myrtle was once well-known as a herbal cure. Celtic warriers used it to treat their wounds, the Scots even used it to flavour their beer, and it was also used as an insect repellent and anti-depressant. Now scientists at Molecularnature are attempting to extract previously undiscovered chemical compounds from the orange-flowered plant. If a commercial application is found, farmers in Wales may be encouraged to grow it.
Pre-historic wood found at mine A fossilised wood dating back 300,000 million years has been discovered at an open cast mine in south Wales. Approximately 40 trees and a number of bushes preserved in mudstone have been uncovered at a opencast site in the Dulais Valley. The fossils, some several feet tall, date back to the Carboniferous period when South Wales was situated over the Equator and enjoyed a tropical climate.
Inquiry into flats blaze Police and firefighters are investigating after twelve people were trapped by flames at a block of flats in Llandudno. They were unable to escape because a stairway was on fire at the flats in Hospital Road on Wednesday night. Firefighters say, they believe the fire was started deliberately. But North Wales Police say they have yet to establish if it was arson. No one was hurt in the blaze, but some families will need rehousing.
Police hunt masked gunman Police in Cardiff are hunting a masked gunman who tried to rob a post office near the city centre. The man walked into the Neville Street Post Office at 1600 GMT on Tuesday and slid the barrel of the gun under the counter. He demanded cash from the till but the assistant pressed an alarm button and the man fled empty-handed. He was wearing a dark coat and a woollen fleecy hat which he was using as a mask. Anyone who saw the raider run off in the direction of Mandeville Street is being asked to contact the police at Fairwater.
£20m rubbish centre in the spotlight A public meeting is being held in Wrexham to discuss plans for a controversial £20m waste centre for the town. The council hopes the £20m incinerator project will solve the town's rubbish disposal problem. In November, opponents staged a demonstration outside the Wrexham council headquarters because they were furious at plans to discuss the matter in private. The proposers of the scheme say it is the most environmentally-friendly way to tackle the waste problem. A meeting has been organised for Wednesday night as an opportunity for locals to raise concerns.
