Troops sent to Bangladesh-Burma border

Border security officials in Bangladesh say Burma has started deploying more soldiers along its south-eastern border.

And they say Bangladesh has sent its own reinforcements to the border in response to Burma's move.

There's been renewed tension in the area since reports last week that Burma has started building a dam on the river Naaf, which forms part of the border.

On Monday, border guards of the two countries exchanged fire.

But, in a written protest, the Burmese government said the firing by Bangladeshi soldiers was unprovoked. The Burmese authorities suspended the contruction work after Bangladesh summoned the Burmese ambassador earlier this week.

Bangladesh says the dam on the River Naaf would flood or cause erosion in its territory and damage shrimp farms.
