Siberia, renowned for its icy weather, has seen its lowest temperatures for thirty years - down to minus 57 celsius. Public transport has ground to a halt, firefighters have had the water freeze in their hoses, and hospitals have been swamped by cases of frostbite.

People across the UK witnessed a total eclipse of the moon on Tuesday. For nearly an hour the moon was in darkness, as the earth's shadow passed across it. All over the country, astronomers gathered around their telescopes to watch the moon slip into darkness.

The Italian jewel, Venice, is experiencing its worst ever flooding. Some parts of the city, including Saint Mark's Square, are under three feet of water. The flooding is so bad that some experts are warning it could do lasting damage.
