Four killed in Assam violence

Police in the northeastern Indian state of Assam say four members of a family have been killed by suspected rebels.

A police spokesman said heavily-armed guerrillas of the United Peoples Democratic Solidarity UPDS had lined up seven family members and fired at them, killing four on the spot and seriously injuring others.

The UPDS rebels are fighting for a separate homeland and have been blamed for a recent spate of attacks against settlers from outside Assam.
