Kashmir airport attack foiled, say police

Police in Indian-administered Kashmir say soldiers have foiled an attempt by separatist militants to breach the security at the civilian airport in Srinagar.

Police said five militants, dressed in police uniforms, were stopped as they drove up to the airport's main gate.

The five told soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force who stopped them that they were collecting a police officer.

When the soldiers refused them admission they turned back.

It is understood no arrests were made.

Police released details of the incident after a man claiming to be a spokesman for a militant group -- Lashkar-e-Toyeba -- telephoned the BBC and said a suicide squad had attacked the city airport.

Security has now been tightened around the airport.
