UN finds radiation at Kosovo sites

The United Nations says it's concerned that higher than normal radioactivity has been found at sites in Kosovo where NATO aircraft fired weapons containing depleted uranium.

The head of a UN team of investigators, leader, Pekka Haavisto, told the BBC he was surprised that radioactive fragments had been left in areas where children played and animals grazed, eighteen months after the NATO campaign to drive Serb forces out of Kosovo.

There's been growing concern about the possible health hazards from depleted uranium munitions.

But Mr Haavisto said there was no evidence as yet to link directly the use of depleted uranium weapons with the deaths from leukaemia of soldiers who served in the Balkans.
